Put the softened butter and sugar in a large bowl and mix them together until they are light and fluffy

Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix them in well

Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ones, making sure to mix well after each addition

Separate the cookie dough into two parts

Add red food coloring to one part and mix until you get the color you want

Add green food coloring to the other half and mix until you get the color you want

Put the dough pieces in the fridge for at least an hour with plastic wrap covering them

Warm your oven up to 350F 175C and put parchment paper on a baking sheet

Make thin ropes out of a small amount of red and green dough

Make shapes out of the ropes, like a candy cane or something else holiday-themed

Place the cookie shapes on the baking sheet that has been prepared

Add different kinds of decorations to the cookies

For 8 to 10 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden, bake the cookies

After taking the cookies out of the oven, let them cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before moving them to a wire rack to cool all the way down

After the cookies have cooled, put them in a container that won't let air in
